Description
Veteran UK-based indie game developers, Puppygames have released a string of classics over 20 years in the business. Their focus on strong game mechanics, mixing of genres and their distinctive and influential visual style have given them a cult following.
History
The Puppy AwakensPuppygames were formed in 2002 by two former school friends, with the aim to make an overly ambitious MMO project, Multiple Injury. Undeterred by failure, they turned to making simpler 2D arcade games, releasing Alien Flux in 2003, followed by Super Dudester (AKA Super Elvis) in 2004. Their distinctive neo-retro style developed over subsequent releases: Puppytron, Titan Attacks!, Ultratron and Droid Assault, and their work on the original Lightweight Java Game Library would help future games such as Minecraft and Project Zomboid.
The Rise of PuppyTheir next and most ambitious release, Revenge of the Titans, would happily coincide with the first indie games making it big on Steam, and the first Humble Indie Bundles. Revenge of the Titans was included in Humble Indie Bundle #2 in 2010, and released on Steam the following year. Its success led to Titan Attacks! and Droid Assault being remastered and released on Steam, with Justin 'Allicorn' Burt joining the team for a reimagined Ultratron.
The Puppy Strikes BackFollowing the release of Revenge of the Titans, work started on a multiplayer sequel, Battledroid. Meanwhile, Basingstoke, a tense roguelike mixing stealth and arcade action, was their first 3D game and their largest project, launching in 2008 after over 3 years of development. Following Daniel Isheden joining the team, Battledroid also switched from 2D to using a completely bespoke, state-of-the-art voxel rendering engine.
